Abstract

Ethnic and religious tolerance is especially necessary for officers of State Inspection for Road Traffic Safety, whose activity implies communication with a great number of people. The results of public opinion poll conducted among 302 traffic officers representing 9 GIBDD divisions of 62 Russian regions are provided. Though the tolerance level in traffic officers’ team is rather high, they have some problems associated with displaying tolerance in relationships with people, the problem of interethnic tolerance is particularly important. Police officers themselves should play the leading role in establishing tolerant communication. They should overcome dissociation related to ethnic and religious motives through demonstrating community of goals, interests and opinions with a person in a certain situation. They should also display confidence and resoluteness, communicate professionally and base their own actions on the requirements of normative acts. In case of ethnic and religious conflict traffic officers should control their emotions, collect their thoughts and reconsider the critical situation and person’s state. The issue of tolerance boundaries is raised. It’s stated that respect for national and religious customs and traditions should not be transformed into connivance. Unified legal assessment of the activities of every citizen regardless of his/her nationality or religion is considered to be essential. Proposals on the professional communication of traffic officers in situations when it’s necessary to take into account ethnicity and religious orientation of drivers and other road traffic participants, are made. It will allow to improve moral and ethnic image of the Russian traffic officers.
