Abstract

The high rate of recidivism among persons completed their sentence in places of confinement (53.2 %) indicates the low efficiency of individual prevention and insufficient corrective influence of the penal system. Achieving the punishment goals is associated with revealing internal subjective causes of committing a crime. Convict’s personality should be the object of scientific study as well as of educational, psychological and other influence of penal institutions. The author proves the necessity of combining sociological and psychological methods when studying personality characteristics of convicts, since sociological methods don’t allow to reveal personal causes of criminal behaviour (the object of preventive influence). General and special measures of preventing crimes among convicts are considered. The provisions of both the Instruction on preventing crimes among prisoners and the general components of crime prevention (measures, structural divisions) are analyzed. Individual prevention of offences implies organizing purposeful, systematic and differentiated work with convicts put on preventive register taking into account psychological characteristics of their personalities, character and degree of public danger of the committed offences as well as other personality characteristics being important for proper choice of methods and means of educational influence. It’s summarized that the purpose of penitentiary system is exerting proper influence on convicts in order to prevent repeated criminal behaviour. Convict’s personality is considered as main object of psychological and pedagogical influence and central point of penal system’s activities.
